Over the past several years we were asked to create a wide range of artifacts in copper mainly due to its resilience to rot and rust. It can do neither. Impervious to water damage, for example the Statue of Liberty is entirely copper and the plumbing throughout your house is copper tubing. We produce table tops, handrails, weathervanes, spires, cupola tops, birdbaths, outdoor showers and, more recently, canopies and awnings over doors and windows. In Key West most awnings are made of aluminum braces covered with canvas. These look great for a year or two but then fall prey to sun wear and rot. They are not cheap to make either. Many of the craftsman producing sewn canvas awnings demand high prices for their labor intensive products.

Copper Awnings on the other hand are strong, weather resistant and easily installed using studs and bolts. This is especially significant where hurricanes are a threat as they can be uninstalled in minutes

Examples:

The Hogfish Bar & Grill, Stock Island, Key West

This awning features a larger than life size hogfish, wave valance and low overhang.

The Pink Building, Safe Harbor, Key West

Seven awnings were produced for this famous building. All featured wave valances with the main door awning sporting a tall ship under sail and a setting sun.

Prices for awnings vary by design, application and square footage of copper used. They work out to be about 1 1/2 to 2 times the price of canvas. They will however, last for your lifetime at least. As with any custom made product we go through the design and pricing stages together. I do not install awnings. I do not carry insurance on this activity but there are many people who do.
